Saudi Arabia Travel Update: Airport Disruption, Alternative Flights and Evacuation Options
Updated 11 October 2026. Airport and airline information reflects reports and advisories checked on this date.
Travellers in Saudi Arabia are facing renewed flight disruption following the attack on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on 10 October. Airport operations have been suspended, airlines have cancelled services, and travellers are assessing alternative flights and coordinated departures by road.
For anyone stranded in Saudi Arabia, the appropriate next step depends on their location, nationality, documentation, medical needs and confirmed onward travel. Options may include rebooking a commercial flight, travelling to another airport, crossing into a neighbouring country or remaining temporarily in suitable accommodation while arrangements are established.
Is Riyadh airport closed?
King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh (RUH) remained closed in reporting checked on 11 October, following the previous day’s attack. Travellers should not rely on earlier reports that flights had resumed before this latest incident.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office advises British nationals to avoid King Khalid International Airport until it is secure and to monitor Saudi authority instructions. A flight appearing as scheduled online should not be treated as confirmation that airport access or departure is available. (gov.uk) Contact the airline or booking agent before leaving accommodation. Ask about rebooking, alternative departure airports and the effect on the rest of the itinerary.
Are Jeddah, Dammam and other Saudi airports affected?
Disruption extends beyond flights using Riyadh. However, cancellation of an airline service does not necessarily mean that the entire airport is closed.
Airport
Position at the time of this update
Riyadh - King Khalid (RUH)
Closure reported on 11 October following the 10 October attack.
Jeddah - King Abdulaziz (JED)
Selected services are cancelled across 11–13 October. This does not establish an airport-wide closure.
Dammam - King Fahd (DMM)
Selected services are cancelled across 11–13 October. Reuters also reported a projectile falling near the airport on 10 October.
Madinah - Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz (MED)
Flight-tracking information showed some departures operating on 11 October. Each proposed flight still requires airline confirmation. Etihad’s latest advisory lists affected services involving Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam through 13 October, rather than a blanket suspension of every flight at those airports.
For Abha, Jizan, Najran, Yanbu, Taif and other airports, obtain a current airport and airline update before arranging a transfer. The FCDO identifies a heightened threat to infrastructure across several Saudi locations and advises against all but essential travel to specified provinces and areas. (gov.uk)
Can I leave Saudi Arabia through a neighbouring country?
An overland journey followed by an international flight may be an option where a suitable route, lawful border crossing and onward booking can be confirmed. Possible departure airports include Bahrain International (BAH), Doha Hamad International (DOH), Abu Dhabi Zayed International (AUH), Dubai International (DXB), Amman Queen Alia International (AMM) and Muscat International (MCT).
At the time of review, flight boards for Doha, Dubai, Bahrain and Amman continued to list international services, alongside individual cancellations or delays. These listings are an indication of potential onward options, rather than confirmation of normal operations or available seats. Muscat’s retrieved flight information was older and requires a fresh check before movement.
A cancelled Saudi service does not automatically mean that the airline’s hub airport is closed. Equally, reaching a functioning airport does not guarantee a seat. Confirm both access to the country and the onward flight before committing to a long road journey.
Ground transport routes from Saudi Arabia
The routes below are established geographical connections to assess. They are not confirmation that a crossing is currently open, that entry will be permitted or that a journey is suitable for a particular traveller.
Saudi Arabia to Bahrain
For travellers in Dammam, Al Khobar and the Eastern Province, the King Fahd Causeway provides the road connection into Bahrain, with onward access to Bahrain International Airport. Planning should cover causeway conditions, entry eligibility, vehicle permissions and the onward flight. A driver or rental vehicle may require specific authorisation to cross the border.
Saudi Arabia to Qatar
Qatar is accessible by road through the Abu Samra border crossing, with onward travel towards Doha and Hamad International Airport. Before departure, confirm entry requirements for every passenger, vehicle arrangements and the full onward itinerary.
Saudi Arabia to the UAE
The road connection enters the UAE at Al Ghuwaifat, with onward travel towards Abu Dhabi or Dubai. This can involve a substantial journey depending on the starting location. Border processing, rest stops and possible delays need to be included in the plan.
Saudi Arabia to Jordan
Jordan may warrant assessment for travellers in northern or north-western Saudi Arabia. Established crossings include Umari, Mudawara and Durra; the appropriate crossing depends on the starting point and onward destination.
For departure through Amman, the border movement and subsequent transfer to Queen Alia International Airport should be planned together. Published normal opening hours should be reconfirmed during disruption.
Saudi Arabia to Oman
A direct road connection exists through the Rub’ al Khali border crossing. Its remote desert setting makes fuel, vehicle reliability, communications, rest arrangements and onward journey planning particularly important. It should be assessed against closer alternatives before being selected.
What evacuation options are available?
Evacuation from Saudi Arabia may involve a coordinated commercial departure, relocation to another departure point, an overland border movement or charter aviation where feasible. Charter aircraft remain dependent on airport operations, airspace access, permissions and operator acceptance. A private aircraft cannot be assumed to overcome an airport closure or aviation restriction.
Where a viable departure has not been confirmed, remaining temporarily in suitable accommodation may be more appropriate than starting an uncertain journey. Follow local instructions, including any direction to shelter or restrict movement.
What should stranded travellers do now?
Confirm your location and welfare with your employer, family or assistance provider. Keep passports, relevant visas or exit permissions, essential medication, chargers and booking details accessible. Before any departure, verify the complete journey including transport provider, route, border eligibility, vehicle permissions, receiving arrangements and onward flight. Travellers with medical conditions, reduced mobility or accompanying children may need additional preparation.
