Italy Flight Strike on 16 October: What easyJet Travellers Should Do Now

Strike arrangements and flight schedules may change. Confirm your individual service directly with the airline.

Travellers booked on easyJet services involving Italy on Friday 16 October should check their plans ahead of a scheduled national strike by the airline’s flight personnel. Naples Airport has published a notice covering the period from 00:00 to 23:59 on 16 October, warning that delays or cancellations may occur. Italy’s civil aviation authority, ENAC, has also published information about flights protected during the industrial action.

The announcement does not mean that every easyJet flight will be cancelled or that Italian airports will close. The practical question is whether your specific service will operate and what a change would mean for the rest of your journey.

Which flights could be affected?

The published notice concerns a national strike by easyJet flight personnel in Italy. Passengers with easyJet bookings to or from the country should monitor airline notifications and their booking’s current status. Do not assume that a flight is cancelled simply because it falls within the strike period. Equally, a booking confirmation issued weeks ago does not establish that the service will operate as originally planned.

ENAC’s protected-flight information is relevant, but travellers should still obtain confirmation from their airline. Other operational issues can affect a service independently of the strike.  Check again before leaving for the airport, particularly if your journey involves an early departure, a long transfer or an overnight stay.

What should you check today?

Start with the booking itself. Confirm that easyJet has your current email address and mobile number, and review any messages received through the airline or booking agent. Look at the whole itinerary rather than the affected flight alone. A delay could mean missing a separately booked connection, arriving after a car-hire desk closes or losing access to a late-night transfer.

If someone is collecting you, agree how you will communicate any changes. If you are travelling for an event, cruise or business meeting, identify the latest arrival time that would still make the journey worthwhile. Keep your booking reference, accommodation details, insurance information and assistance contact accessible offline. This is particularly useful if your phone battery runs low or airport connectivity becomes unreliable.

If your easyJet flight is cancelled

Contact the airline or the agent managing your booking and review the available options before buying a replacement ticket independently. For flights covered by EU passenger-rights rules, cancellation generally gives passengers a choice between reimbursement and rerouting, with assistance obligations also applying. The appropriate option depends on whether you still need to travel and when an alternative service can get you to your destination.

Before accepting a refund, consider whether you want the airline to arrange an alternative journey instead. Ask how your decision affects the remaining booking. easyJet’s disruption guidance explains its processes for alternative flights, refunds and support during an overnight delay. Follow the instructions relevant to your booking, and retain records of the options offered.

Refunds, care and compensation are different

A ticket refund, assistance while waiting and financial compensation address different parts of the disruption. Eligibility for one does not automatically establish eligibility for all three. EU guidance distinguishes strikes by an airline’s own staff from strikes external to the carrier. Internal airline strikes are not generally treated as extraordinary circumstances for compensation purposes, while external industrial action may be. However, compensation still depends on the circumstances, notice given and other applicable conditions.

Avoid assuming either that a strike rules out compensation or that every affected passenger will receive it. Submit questions and claims to the operating airline, supported by your booking details and disruption records.

Protect onward connections and accommodation

If your itinerary includes separate bookings, contact those providers promptly when a change becomes likely. A cancelled flight does not automatically cancel a hotel reservation, train ticket or onward flight without charge. Ask your accommodation provider about late arrival, keeping the room available or changing dates. Check whether transfers and car hire can be amended before their cancellation deadlines.

An alternative airport may help, but assess the complete journey before accepting it. Consider the transfer distance, transport availability, additional costs and whether arrival will be too late to continue safely. For travellers with children, reduced mobility or medical needs, an apparently faster alternative may create a more difficult journey. Explain those requirements when discussing options.

If you are already at the airport

Follow airline and airport instructions and keep monitoring the confirmed status of your flight. Avoid leaving the departure area without understanding whether boarding arrangements have changed. If a substantial delay develops, ask the airline what assistance is available. Keep receipts for necessary expenses and check the airline’s reimbursement requirements before making significant purchases.

Preserve cancellation messages, revised itineraries and written explanations. Clear records can help when requesting reimbursement or making an insurance claim later. Contact your insurer if the disruption may involve benefits under your policy. Check the wording rather than assuming that all strike-related costs are covered.

Getting practical help when plans change

Flight disruption can become a coordination problem involving several providers at once. Travellers may need to update accommodation, identify alternative transport, notify family or employers and establish whether the revised itinerary remains practical. Global Traveller’s global travel assistance provides access to 24/7 human support for travel, medical and security concerns. Our explanation of what travel assistance includes describes how that support can help when a journey becomes complicated.

For anyone flying easyJet to or from Italy on 16 October, the immediate priorities are straightforward: confirm the flight, understand the alternatives and check the consequences for the rest of the trip before committing to a change.
