Civil Unrest and Demonstrations

Protests and demonstrations are common in many countries and do not automatically mean a traveller is in danger. The important question is whether the unrest is affecting the traveller’s location, transport routes or ability to move safely.

Travellers can also require security assistance after robbery, assault, threats or other incidents. The first priority is immediate safety. That may mean moving to a hotel, police station, hospital or other controlled location.

Evacuation is not always the first step. A traveller may simply need to move away from a specific district, hotel or area. Relocation can provide a safer temporary position while the wider situation is assessed. This is often a more proportionate response than leaving the country immediately.

When Evacuation Becomes Necessary

If security conditions continue to deteriorate, evacuation may become the most appropriate option. That can involve movement to another city, a neighbouring country or an airport where onward travel remains available. Evacuation is rarely a single decision. Routes, borders, transport and commercial flight availability all need to be considered together.

Staying Informed Without Becoming Overwhelmed

Travellers often struggle with the volume of information during a security incident. News coverage may be dramatic, while social media may contain rumours or outdated reports.

Security assistance helps filter information and focus on what is relevant to the traveller’s actual location and journey. The goal is to support practical decision-making, not simply provide more alerts.

Travel insurance may cover certain costs linked to a security incident, depending on the policy. Security assistance is different. Its role is to help the traveller understand and manage the incident itself. That may involve advice, movement support or coordination rather than financial reimbursement. When to Ask for Help

Travellers should seek help when they are unsure whether it is safe to continue moving, when they have been directly affected by a security incident or when local conditions are changing faster than they can reasonably assess themselves. You do not need to wait until the situation becomes extreme. Early advice often creates more options.
