TRAVEL ASSISTANCE IN SUDAN

Sudan remains an extremely challenging operating environment following the outbreak of conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces in April 2023. Most travel advisories advise against all travel to Sudan because of the ongoing military conflict. This page is therefore intended primarily for organisations and personnel who have a genuine operational requirement to be in the country, rather than conventional leisure travel.

Personnel may be operating from Port Sudan, travelling between operational locations, supporting humanitarian or development programmes, working on essential infrastructure or undertaking other necessary activities. These environments can involve very different transportation, medical and security requirements.

Global Traveller provides assistance with medical issues, security incidents, transportation problems, communications disruption and unexpected changes to an itinerary. Where a situation requires more than information, our Operations Centre can assess the circumstances and coordinate appropriate support through our international provider network.

Travel Assistance

Understand and manage travel risks before departure and while travelling.

Global Traveller support travellers with destination information, travel intelligence, location alerts and access to operational assistance when circumstances change.

Secure Transportation

Professional transportation for business travellers, executives and project personnel.

From airport transfers and city movements to complex journeys, transportation can be planned around the traveller, itinerary and operating environment.

Executive Protection

Professional Protective support for executives, senior personnel and families travelling in Sudan.

Support can include protective planning, secure movements, local coordination and executive transportation.

Medical Assistance

24/7 coordination when a traveller becomes ill or is injured.

Global Traveller coordinates medical assistance, hospital support, ambulance services, medical referrals and evacuation or repatriation.

Medical Assistance

Healthcare capability in Sudan has been severely affected by the conflict. Many hospitals and medical facilities are unavailable or operating with significantly reduced capability, while emergency services have also been severely affected. FCDO states that medical facilities are limited and that medical evacuation is likely to be necessary for all but the most basic treatments. (GOV.UK)

Global Traveller can help members identify available medical facilities, coordinate medical transportation, support communication with providers and manage the practical requirements surrounding a medical incident. For personnel operating outside major population centres, access to appropriate treatment can become particularly difficult. Where suitable treatment is unavailable locally, our Operations Centre can coordinate medical evacuation or repatriation through appropriate providers, subject to security and operational feasibility.

Travel Security & Regional Awareness

Sudan remains an active conflict environment, with security conditions varying significantly between regions. The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces continues, with fighting and associated security risks affecting multiple parts of the country. There is also a high threat of detention, kidnap, enforced disappearance and unlawful arrest. Violent crime has increased in a number of locations, while checkpoints, armed groups, military activity and rapidly changing local conditions can create significant challenges for personnel movement.

Global Traveller provides travel intelligence and location-relevant alerts alongside access to human assistance. Members can contact the Operations Centre for practical guidance, incident support, local coordination or assistance with changing travel arrangements. Global Traveller does not guarantee access to any location or the ability to evacuate a traveller. Any response remains dependent on the security situation, available transportation, airspace, airports, borders and other operational factors.

Executive & Business Travel

Port Sudan is an important operational and logistical centre, while other parts of Sudan continue to support humanitarian, infrastructure, energy, agricultural and essential commercial activity. Organisations operating in Sudan may have personnel travelling between offices, project locations, accommodation, airports, ports and border areas.

Global Traveller provides assistance throughout these journeys, including transportation coordination, medical support, travel disruption assistance and response to unexpected incidents. For executives, project teams and personnel requiring more complex movements, secure transportation, local operational support or other specialist resources can be coordinated through our provider network where operationally feasible.

Movement & Remote Operations

Travel within Sudan can involve significant distances, poor road conditions, checkpoints, active conflict areas and limited communications. Road travel currently involves heightened risk and should only be undertaken when strictly necessary. Roads can be poor, lighting is limited and road traffic accidents are common.

Global Traveller can assist with movement planning, transportation coordination, medical support and emergency response where required. For organisations operating outside established urban areas, the ability to maintain communications, understand changing conditions and identify appropriate local resources can become particularly important.

Aviation, Borders & Departure Planning

Air travel in Sudan remains subject to significant operational uncertainty. Khartoum and Port Sudan airports are operating limited numbers of flights, but both airports have been targeted by drone strikes and may close temporarily. Land-border movements also require careful planning. Sudan’s borders with Chad and Eritrea are currently closed, while crossings into Egypt at Argeen and Qustul have limited infrastructure and can involve significant delays.

Global Traveller can provide assistance with travel intelligence, transportation coordination and changing departure arrangements where operationally possible. For personnel needing to leave Sudan, our Operations Centre can assess available options and coordinate appropriate providers based on the circumstances at the time.

Weather, Flooding & Environmental Conditions

Sudan experiences extreme heat and seasonal weather conditions that can add further challenges to an already difficult operating environment. The rainy season between July and October can result in flash flooding, with roads becoming inaccessible and some areas particularly difficult to reach.

Global Traveller provides travel intelligence and alerts to help members understand developing conditions. If disruption affects an existing journey, our Operations Centre can help coordinate alternative transportation, accommodation and onward travel where this is operationally possible. For personnel in remote areas, the response may require additional transportation or specialist resources.

Medical Evacuation & Emergency Support

When an incident requires more than local assistance, Global Traveller can coordinate medical transportation, evacuation, repatriation and onward movement through appropriate providers. Our Operations Centre assesses the circumstances and coordinates communication between the traveller, medical facilities, transportation providers and other relevant parties.

In Sudan, this may involve multiple stages of transportation and coordination before a traveller can reach an appropriate medical facility or departure point. Where a traveller cannot continue their original journey, onward movement or repatriation can be coordinated where operationally possible. Third-party costs for medical treatment, transportation or evacuation are separate from Global Traveller membership unless otherwise agreed.

More Than an App

The Global Traveller app provides destination information, travel intelligence, alerts, itinerary features and direct access to assistance. But the service goes beyond digital information. When something happens, members can contact our Operations Centre and speak with an experienced assistance team able to assess the circumstances and coordinate appropriate support.

Communications in Sudan can be disrupted without warning, with regular mobile phone and internet outages reported. The app keeps travellers informed and connected when connectivity is available. The Operations Centre provides the human assistance behind the membership.
