TRAVEL ASSISTANCE IN IRAQ
Iraq is an important Middle Eastern economy with significant activity across energy, infrastructure, construction, telecommunications, logistics, international development and government services. Baghdad is the country’s political and commercial centre, while Basra supports substantial oil, gas, maritime and industrial activity. Erbil and Sulaymaniyah are important centres for business, international organisations and commercial activity in the Kurdistan Region.
International travel also extends beyond these cities to oilfields, construction projects, infrastructure developments, industrial facilities and locations supporting humanitarian and development programmes. A business itinerary might involve meetings in Baghdad, a visit to an energy facility near Basra, onward travel to Erbil or movements between several operational locations. However, travel conditions vary significantly across the country, and security, transportation and medical access can change with little notice.
FCDO advises against all travel to several Iraqi provinces and against all but essential travel to other areas. Travellers should review the current advice for their specific destination before making arrangements. (GOV.UK)
Global Traveller provides assistance with medical issues, travel disruption, transportation problems, security concerns and unexpected changes to an itinerary. Where a situation requires more than information, our Operations Centre can assess the circumstances and coordinate appropriate support through our international provider network. For Iraq, advance planning and the availability of appropriate local resources are particularly important because assistance and emergency movements may be affected by prevailing security conditions.

Medical Assistance
Healthcare provision in Iraq varies considerably between cities, regions and individual facilities. Baghdad, Basra, Erbil and Sulaymaniyah have hospitals and private medical facilities offering a range of services, but the availability of specialist treatment, equipment and emergency medical resources can differ substantially.
Outside major population centres, access to appropriate medical care may be limited, particularly in remote industrial locations, rural districts and areas affected by previous conflict. Travellers may also encounter differences in admission procedures, payment requirements and the availability of English-speaking medical personnel. Visitors should ensure that appropriate healthcare is available at their destination and that their insurance covers local treatment and unexpected medical evacuation.
Global Traveller can help members identify appropriate medical facilities, coordinate appointments or hospital admissions, arrange ambulance or medical transportation and support communication with medical providers. For travellers requiring specialist treatment, our Operations Centre can assist with identifying suitable facilities and coordinating arrangements between hospitals, treating clinicians and transportation providers.
Medical access can become particularly challenging for personnel working at remote oilfields, industrial projects or locations where movement is restricted by security arrangements. A medical incident may require coordination between the traveller, employer, local transportation providers, treating clinicians and a receiving hospital. Where appropriate treatment is unavailable locally, Global Traveller can coordinate medical evacuation to another facility within Iraq or internationally through suitable providers, subject to operational access and relevant permissions.
Travel Security & Regional Awareness
Iraq presents a complex security environment, with conditions varying significantly between Baghdad, southern Iraq, the Kurdistan Region and areas affected by previous conflict. The country continues to experience threats associated with terrorism, armed groups, political tensions, criminal activity and regional military developments. FCDO continues to warn that terrorists are very likely to attempt attacks in Iraq and identifies a continuing threat of kidnapping, including risks affecting foreign nationals, business travellers, journalists and humanitarian personnel. (GOV.UK)
Some areas have also experienced rocket, drone and other attacks linked to wider regional tensions. Political demonstrations, security operations, checkpoints and temporary restrictions can affect movement in major cities and along important transportation routes. The security situation in the Kurdistan Region differs from that in many parts of federal Iraq, but travellers should not assume that Erbil or Sulaymaniyah are unaffected by regional threats.
There remains a possibility of attacks and sudden disruption affecting the Kurdistan Region, including routes to its international airports. Global Traveller provides travel intelligence and location-relevant alerts alongside access to human assistance. Members can contact our Operations Centre for practical guidance, incident support, local coordination or assistance with changing travel arrangements. For travellers operating in Iraq, reliable communication, appropriate transportation arrangements and an understanding of local conditions can become particularly important when circumstances change.
Executive & Business Travel
Iraq’s economy generates substantial international business travel, particularly across oil and gas, energy services, engineering, construction, infrastructure, logistics, telecommunications and professional services. Baghdad is home to major government institutions, commercial organisations and international businesses, while Basra is central to the country’s oil industry and associated industrial activity.
The Kurdistan Region supports a separate concentration of commercial operations, energy activity, international organisations and development projects, particularly around Erbil and Sulaymaniyah. Business itineraries may involve movements between airports, hotels, government offices, industrial facilities, project sites and remote operational locations. These journeys can require more extensive preparation than conventional international business travel, particularly where routes pass through checkpoints or areas with changing security conditions.
Global Traveller provides assistance throughout these journeys, including transportation coordination, medical support, travel disruption assistance and response to unexpected incidents. For executives and business travellers requiring more complex movements, secure transportation, executive protection, local operational support or other specialist resources can be coordinated through our provider network. For organisations with broader requirements, Stratum Global Risk provides dedicated corporate travel risk management and operational support across Iraq and the wider Middle East. Its services include travel risk assessments, journey management, traveller monitoring, secure transportation, medical contingency planning, incident response, crisis management and evacuation planning.
Stratum can also support organisations requiring dedicated movement coordination, local liaison and contingency arrangements for personnel travelling between major cities, energy facilities and other operational locations. For organisations operating in more complex environments, this provides a comprehensive approach to managing personnel movements and emergency preparedness beyond the individual assistance available through Global Traveller membership.
For organisations requiring dedicated corporate support, see Iraq Travel Risk Management & Assistance from Stratum Global Risk.
Baghdad, Basra & the Kurdistan Region
Iraq’s principal commercial centres have distinct operating environments and travel considerations. Baghdad is the country’s political and administrative centre, with substantial government, diplomatic, commercial and international development activity. Movement within the city can be affected by traffic congestion, checkpoints, security operations, demonstrations and temporary road restrictions. Routes to and from Baghdad International Airport may close with little or no notice, making advance transportation planning particularly important.
Basra is a major centre for oil, gas, maritime and industrial operations. International personnel frequently travel between the city, surrounding energy facilities, ports and project locations. These movements can involve restricted facilities, lengthy road journeys and operational arrangements that differ from conventional city travel.
Erbil and Sulaymaniyah serve as important gateways to the Kurdistan Region, attracting business travellers, international organisations and technical personnel. Although the Kurdistan Region has its own administrative and security arrangements, regional tensions, border restrictions and changes to aviation services can still affect travel.
Global Traveller can assist with journey planning, transportation coordination, medical support and practical assistance across these different environments. Where a traveller’s itinerary involves several locations, our Operations Centre can help coordinate appropriate providers and support changes to planned movements.
Oilfields, Industrial Projects & Remote Operations
Iraq’s energy sector creates substantial travel requirements beyond the country’s major cities. Oil and gas operations around Basra, industrial developments in southern Iraq and energy projects elsewhere in the country attract international engineers, technical specialists, contractors and management personnel. Other international operations include infrastructure construction, telecommunications, logistics, humanitarian programmes and development projects. These activities may involve remote sites, restricted compounds, lengthy road transfers and limited access to appropriate medical facilities.
Remote desert areas can have limited communications, healthcare and security infrastructure. There also remains a significant risk landmines and unexploded ordnance in parts of Iraq, particularly in areas affected by previous conflict. For international personnel, the availability of suitable transportation, medical resources and contingency arrangements can become an important part of operational planning.
Global Traveller can assist with medical coordination, transportation arrangements and emergency support where required. Our Operations Centre can help identify appropriate local resources and coordinate communication between travellers, employers, medical facilities and transportation providers. For organisations working at remote or higher risk locations, Global Traveller assistance can complement existing project medical, security and emergency response arrangements.
Aviation, Borders & Departure Planning
International aviation provides important connections to Baghdad, Basra, Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and other Iraqi destinations. However, flight schedules and airport operations can be affected by regional military developments, security incidents, airspace restrictions and operational disruption. Baghdad and Erbil airports have experienced attacks or temporary closures and flight schedules may change without notice.
During periods of regional escalation, travellers may face limited commercial flight availability or uncertainty about onward departure arrangements. Land borders with neighbouring countries can provide alternative movement options in some circumstances, but crossing arrangements vary considerably depending on nationality, documentation, security conditions and border operations. Border crossings may close with little or no notice and travellers should use official crossing points and established routes.
Global Traveller assists with identifying available travel options, coordinating transportation and supporting practical departure arrangements where operationally possible. For travellers requiring more complex movements, this may involve coordination between transportation providers, local contacts and onward travel services. Alternative routes should not be assumed to remain available during a developing crisis, and all movements remain subject to the necessary permissions and prevailing conditions.
Extreme Heat, Dust Storms & Natural Disruption
Iraq experiences extremely high temperatures during the summer months, particularly across Baghdad, Basra and the southern provinces. Prolonged exposure to heat can create significant health risks, especially for travellers undertaking outdoor activities or working at industrial and construction sites. Dust and sandstorms are also common during parts of the year, reducing visibility, affecting road travel and occasionally disrupting aviation. Poor air quality can create additional difficulties for travellers with respiratory conditions.
Northern Iraq and the Kurdistan Region experience different seasonal conditions, including colder winters, mountain snowfall and periods of heavy rainfall. Flash flooding can affect roads and settlements, while earthquakes are a recognised risk in parts of the country.
Global Traveller provides travel intelligence and location-relevant alerts to help members understand developing conditions. If weather disruption affects an existing journey, our Operations Centre can help coordinate alternative transportation and onward travel. For travellers in remote areas, appropriate medical or specialist transportation can also be coordinated where required.
Medical Evacuation & Emergency Support
When an incident requires more than local assistance, Global Traveller can coordinate medical transportation, evacuation, repatriation and onward movement through appropriate providers. Our Operations Centre assesses the circumstances and coordinates communication between the traveller, medical facilities, transportation providers and other relevant parties.
Medical evacuation requirements in Iraq can vary considerably depending on the location of an incident, the available medical facilities and prevailing security conditions. In Baghdad, Basra or Erbil, appropriate treatment may be available locally for some conditions. At remote oilfields, industrial facilities or locations affected by restricted movement, the first priority may involve arranging transportation to a suitable regional hospital.
More complex cases may require specialist ground ambulances, medical escorts, air ambulance services or international repatriation. Security conditions, airspace restrictions and the availability of commercial aviation can also affect emergency movements. In some circumstances, onward transportation through a neighbouring country may be considered, but such arrangements depend on border access, permissions, available providers and the prevailing security environment.
Global Traveller can assist with identifying available options and coordinating appropriate resources, subject to operational conditions. Where a traveller cannot continue their original journey, onward movement or repatriation can be coordinated where operationally possible. Emergency assistance and evacuation cannot be guaranteed in areas affected by active hostilities, inaccessible routes or restrictions beyond the control of responding providers. Third-party costs for medical treatment, transportation or evacuation are separate from Global Traveller membership unless otherwise agreed.
