TRAVEL ASSISTANCE IN ECUADOR

Ecuador combines major cities and commercial centres with high-altitude Andean environments, Pacific coastal destinations, remote Amazonian areas and the geographically isolated Galápagos Islands. A business itinerary might involve Quito, Guayaquil or an industrial project on the coast. A leisure journey could extend from the Andes into the Amazon or onwards to the Galápagos.

These different environments can involve very different transportation, medical and security requirements. Global Traveller provides assistance with medical issues, travel disruption, transportation problems, security concerns and unexpected changes to an itinerary. Where a situation requires more than information, our Operations Centre can assess the circumstances and coordinate appropriate support through our international provider network.

Medical Assistance

Global Traveller coordinates medical assistance, hospital support, ambulance services, medical referrals and evacuation or repatriation.

Medical Assistance

Healthcare capability in Ecuador varies between locations. Major cities have access to private hospitals and specialist medical facilities, but healthcare standards and access to specialised treatment can be more limited outside the main population centres. Private treatment can also be expensive, while medical facilities in the Galápagos Islands are considerably more limited than on the mainland.

Global Traveller can help members identify appropriate medical facilities, coordinate appointments or admissions, arrange ambulance or medical transportation and support communication with medical providers. For travellers operating in remote areas or on the Galápagos Islands, the distance to appropriate medical care can become an important consideration. Where specialist treatment is unavailable locally, our Operations Centre can coordinate medical evacuation or repatriation through suitable providers.

Travel Security & Regional Awareness

Ecuador’s security environment varies considerably between regions. Gang related violence and organised crime have created significant security concerns in parts of the coastal region, while areas close to the Colombia border can also present additional risks. FCDO currently advises against all but essential travel to several coastal provinces, including Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. It also advises against all but essential travel within 20km of the Ecuador-Colombia border, subject to specific exceptions. (GOV.UK)

Guayaquil and parts of the coastal region have experienced serious violent crime, including armed robbery and express kidnapping. Global Traveller provides travel intelligence and location-relevant alerts alongside access to human assistance. Members can contact the Operations Centre for practical guidance, incident support, local coordination or assistance with changing travel arrangements.

Executive & Business Travel

Quito is Ecuador’s political and administrative centre, while Guayaquil is a major commercial, industrial and port city. Ecuador’s economy has significant links to energy, mining, agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, infrastructure and international trade. Business travel can therefore extend beyond the main cities, including travel to industrial facilities, ports, mining areas and remote project locations.

Global Traveller provides assistance throughout these journeys, including transportation coordination, medical support, travel disruption assistance and response to unexpected incidents. For executives and business travellers requiring more complex movements, secure transportation, local operational support or other specialist resources can be coordinated through our provider network.

Andes & High-Altitude Travel

Ecuador’s geography creates significant differences in altitude across relatively short journeys. Quito is located at approximately 2,850 metres above sea level, while many popular destinations in the Andes are considerably higher. Altitude sickness can affect travellers who have not acclimatised, while mountain weather can change quickly. Volcanic activity can also affect roads and aviation.

Global Traveller can assist with journey planning, medical support, transportation coordination and emergency response where required. For travellers undertaking trekking, climbing or other activities at altitude, access to appropriate medical and transportation resources can become particularly important.

Amazon & Remote Travel

Ecuador’s Amazon region creates a very different operating environment from Quito and the major coastal cities. Remote lodges and travel locations can be a considerable distance from major hospitals, while road access and communications may be limited. Travellers in some remote Amazonian areas should maintain good communications, travel with reputable guides and have an emergency plan.

Global Traveller can assist with journey planning, transportation coordination, medical support and emergency response where required. For remote travel, the ability to identify appropriate local resources and coordinate assistance quickly can become particularly important.

Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos Islands require additional consideration because of their geographical isolation from mainland Ecuador. Medical facilities are limited and healthcare provision varies between the islands. Serious medical cases may require transfer to another island or to the mainland. Travel between islands can also involve small vessels and additional transportation considerations.

Global Traveller can assist with medical coordination, transportation and emergency response where required. For travellers undertaking island-hopping, cruises, diving, wildlife excursions or other activities away from mainland Ecuador, access to appropriate assistance can become particularly important.

Transportation & Road Travel

Road travel is an important consideration in Ecuador, particularly for journeys between major cities and remote destinations. Road accidents, variable road conditions, landslides and disruption caused by heavy rainfall can affect journeys. Public transport and intercity travel can also present security considerations in some areas.

Global Traveller can assist with transportation coordination and help members identify appropriate local transportation options. For longer journeys, particularly into remote areas, additional planning may be appropriate around communications, medical access and contingency arrangements. Where required, specialist or secure transportation can also be coordinated through our provider network.

Weather, Earthquakes & Volcanic Disruption

Ecuador is exposed to a range of natural hazards, including earthquakes, volcanic activity, landslides, flooding and forest fires. The country has numerous active or potentially active volcanoes, while volcanic ash can disrupt flights and close airports at short notice. Heavy rainfall can also cause landslides and road disruption.

Ecuador is also currently experiencing additional weather considerations associated with the 2026–2027 El Niño event. Global Traveller provides travel intelligence and alerts to help members understand developing conditions. If disruption affects an existing journey, our Operations Centre can help coordinate alternative transportation, accommodation and onward travel. For travellers in remote areas or on the Galápagos Islands, the response may require additional transportation or specialist resources.

Medical Evacuation & Emergency Support

When an incident requires more than local assistance, Global Traveller can coordinate medical transportation, evacuation, repatriation and onward movement through appropriate providers. Our Operations Centre assesses the circumstances and coordinates communication between the traveller, medical facilities, transportation providers and other relevant parties. For remote Amazon locations or the Galápagos Islands, this may involve coordinating several stages of transportation before the traveller reaches an appropriate medical facility.

Where a traveller cannot continue their original journey, onward movement or repatriation can be coordinated where operationally possible. Third-party costs for medical treatment, transportation or evacuation are separate from Global Traveller membership unless otherwise agreed.
